vintage-store-display-picket-fence-imports
Shop Display prepared by Rod and Marie with unique, vintage pieces.

Picket Fence Imports has been recreating valued and loved vintage pieces for personal collections, interior designers,  shop fronts, and displays for over 16 years. It started with Marie’s love for shoe lasts. Marie said that she would collect them everywhere she went and had hundreds in her personal collection. People were fascinated by her unique and incredible collection and Marie and her husband Rod realised that this was a niche market that no-one had tapped into so they began sourcing these incredible pieces of history from overseas and began selling them in Australia.

Designer Tales: Beste Ogan Designs

beste-oganBeste is a talented designer who makes beautiful ceramic pieces. Originally from Izmir Turkey, Beste has a background in Business. She completed her degree in Istanbul and later was put in charge of an international packaging company, where she worked and re-developed the company for 8 years. While the business grew to be successful and taught Beste a lot of valuable life lessons along the way, it also came with it’s challenges.

When the GFC hit in 2010, the business was greatly impacted, as well as her family. Beste around this time began to learn interior design through a course she started taking. Recognising her love for the arts, she realised that perhaps it wasn’t too late to start afresh.

Little Brown Dog Studios
Bec uses recycled and vintage fabrics from her collection to create unique pieces of work from clothing to homewares, cushions and recovered furniture.

How it all began, with an LP-sized man bag

It all started with a man bag. A bag Bec designed, screen printed and sewed together for her husband. Bec specially designed it to even fit her husband’s LPs (records), of which she says there are a lot of in her house! It was a bag that he could take with him and use everyday.

Gorgeous Shower Caps that You Are Sure to Love – Supporting The Cancer Council QLD!

dillys-collection-shower-caps-Cap-Cancer
The Cupcake Shower Cap Design. Supporting Cap Cancer.

Dalia and her mum Sharona, have started a mother, daughter business. They say that the frizzy hair gene has always been a topic of conversation in their family. Being in a home with three women, they say they have spent many hours trying to tame thick, long and unruly hair.

Keeping their hair frizz free in the shower was always an issue and they struggled to find shower caps that could truly meet their needs. Many of the shower caps they found on the market failed to keep their hair looking nice after a shower, as they found that steam and water ruined their freshly styled hair. Other shower caps lacked style and just about all of these shower caps had to be regularly replaced.

Where Did Father’s Day Begin? A Brief History.

father-Have you ever wondered how we came to celebrate Father’s Day?

Surprisingly, according to some sources, Father’s Day is only a little over 100 years old started in Washington (in the U.S.) by a lady by the name of Ms Sonora Louise Smart Dodd of Washington.

father2The story goes that she was in church listening to a sermon being given for Mother’s Day (as Mother’s Day was already being celebrated at this time). She wanted a day to celebrate her dad, William Jackson Smart. Her own mother had tragically died during childbirth and her father had singlehandedly raised her from birth as well as taking care of his five other children.

Performing under Pressure – Rules to live by with Laura Geitz

“Sometimes our best performance occurs when we are under pressure”  – Laura Geitz.

laura geitz

I had the honour of listening to netball legend and Firebirds Captain Laura Geitz at a luncheon function.   One thing she said really resonated with me, “sometimes our best performance occurs when we are under pressure”.

Laura was referring to the last 15 seconds of the ANZ Championships in 2015 between Queensland Firebirds and the New South Wales Swifts which was held in Brisbane last year. The Firebirds were down and had 15 seconds to score. Apparently in netball terms this is plenty of time. The Swifts looked to have one hand on the premiership trophy late in the final quarter before the Firebirds lifted to record a 57-56 triumph. Goal-keeper Geitz made an interception in the last 10 seconds to stop any late hopes from the Swifts of pushing the decider to extra-time. Goal-attack Gretel Tippett had just seconds earlier landed the shot to put the Firebirds ahead in the dying stages of the game.

Dad’s danceoff on a longboard – Father’s Day Challenge

Dad’s LongBoard Challenge for Father’s Day

I had to share this in my blog as I think a Father’s Day Challenge needs to go out!

So apparently this is a new kind of art called – sepakuma. Sepakuma is the art of expressing individual true self through whichever medium you see fit.

The artist is known as the hairylongboarding. The background music is remix of Dolly Parton’s song “Jolene”.

Challenge Dad to a dance on a long board this father’s day.

Great songs for Dad to dance to on his new Father’s Day LongBoard:

1. Rupert Holmes – Escape (or as I like to call it the Pina colada song)- sound track on Guardians of the Galaxy
